WHAT'S NEW
September 24, 2008
The last three Silver Volt Electric Cars in Apollo's Pilot Plant in Pompano Beach, Florida are now being offered for sale. They will be Pure Electric Cars (no engine) equipped with Apollo's Tri-Polar Lead Cobalt Batteries made with Lead Foam, and Apollo's Alkaline Fuel Cells.
Range: 480 miles, top speed 100 mph. No recharging necessary as the fuel cells will keep the batteries charged at all times. Dr. Karl Kordesch, one of Apollo's Directors, made a Fuel Cell/Battery electric car in 1970 and drove it daily for three years in Ohio before leaving for Austria to head up the Institute for Chemical Technology at the Technical University of Graz. This was the first Fuel Cell/Battery electric car ever made, the forerunner of Apollo's Silver Volt.
Price: US$200,000 each. Delivery in approximately six months after updated Electric Propulsion Systems have been installed and tested.
History: Apollo's Silver Volts were made in 1980 and extensively tested in California in 1980-81-82 (DVD available on request). Recently, MGM borrowed one to make the movie AGENT CODY BANKS (click MGM Movie - Agent Cody Banks).
The Silver Volts were originally built as Plug-In Electric Cars with Tri-Polar Lead Cobalt Batteries + 50-hp Rotary Engines. These were the first Plug-In Electric Cars ever made. They demonstrated a driving range of 100-miles on pure battery power before switching over to the Rotary Engine. They could be recharged in 45-minutes at Coin Operated Charging Stations in California, the first installed at the Marriott Hotel at Los Angeles International Airport in 1982.
Apollo now has five of these cars at its Pilot Plant and plans to ship one to its European Licensee as a Demonstrator. Another will be kept in Pompano Beach as a USA Demonstrator. That leaves three for sale. Cost of production for these five cars was $25 Million.
These three legendary Silver Volts will be sold only to persons willing to participate in Apollo's educational and demonstration programs on University campuses, test tracks and long distance driving events. This is why they are being sold. The world needs to know that future vehicles must be powered by Batteries and Fuel Cells -- no gasoline engines allowed!
