Tallahassee, Florida, June 23, 2005. Apollo entered into an agreement with
the Florida Department of Environmental Protection based on an award from
the U.S. Department of Energy. The agreement calls for a cost-sharing
project under which Apollo shall investigate several methods to quickly heat
the potassium hydroxide electrolyte that circulates through the Alkaline
Fuel Cell to enable startup within 60-seconds.
The final work product will be one 5kW battery/fuel-cell hybrid power plant
that can startup within 60-seconds in case of a grid power failure. The fuel
cell must be able to connect to the AC grid with an inverter (DC to AC). The
fuel cell must continually supply enough current to keep the battery in a
fully charged state, and the system's performance should be monitored by a
microprocessor which turns on the fuel cell system when the battery charge
is less than 75%.
Work on this project will be carried out at Apollo's pilot plant in Pompano
Beach, Florida.
